But if you put your finger a short the ground you might find very dry soil because watering -not too much and not too little is one of the keys to successful garden it helps to get more information about rainfall.

Answer is, we in Pakistan also measure the water falling with a home gauge, with a few empty soup cases or plastic containers and using various types of rain gauges. A rain gauge will tell us if a rainstorm dropped so much rain.
