Traveling is all about the journey, so why not add some fun to the mix? Here are seven activities you can do when traveling to help you enjoy the experience even more.
Make Friends with Locals
When traveling, it’s easy to just sit back and relax. But you’ll miss out on so much if you don’t try to make friends with locals. When I travel, I make a point of finding a local bar or restaurant to hang out at for a few hours at least once a day. It might be a little cheesy, but you never know what kind of connections you can make. I’ve made friends with people from all over the world – and I have no regrets!
2. Volunteer
Volunteering is a great way to connect with your fellow human beings while helping out others. You get to see the world in a completely different light when you’re volunteering instead of traveling on vacation. The best way to find volunteering opportunities? Find a local organization and ask them what they need help with.
3. Take a Walking Tour
There’s nothing like exploring a new city on foot. Whether you want to visit the sites or simply take in the sights, a walking tour is a great way to get to know a city better. I like to use Google Maps for this, but there are plenty of other apps that can help you too.
4. Visit Museums
Museums are some of my favorite places to visit when traveling. I love getting a glimpse into history and learning about the world we live in. You don’t need to go to fancy museums, but if you’re looking for something interesting, try visiting a museum of natural history.
5. Go Shopping
When traveling, you can’t afford to miss out on all of the shopping opportunities that come with it. There are so many great shops in just about every city you visit – from boutiques to markets to flea markets. I like to get a few souvenirs as well – something that reminds me of my travels, whether it’s a postcard or a t-shirt.
6. Learn a New Language
Learning a new language is one of the best things you can do when traveling. It’s fun, it helps you make new friends, and it can even help you advance your career. If you’re looking for a good language to learn, I recommend learning Spanish.
7. Stay in a Hostel
Hostels are a great way to get a cheap place to stay while traveling. You don’t need to spend a fortune, but they’re usually a lot more affordable than hotels. I use HostelWorld to find places to stay, but there are plenty of other websites and apps out there that can help too.
